While traveling recently I saw a cute little pillow that almost resembled a bow and immediately thought I can make something like that! So when I got home I ran to Joann Fabrics and picked up my supplies. I had my kids with me and let my son pick out the fabric and I actually kind of love it. Now my sewing is not the best but this is a fun one to whip together. So don’t take it too seriously and just have fun because making this easy bow pillow is meant to be fun.
This is great as an accent piece for anywhere! Bedrooms, living rooms, office etc. I bought outdoor fabric for mine and am using it with my adorandak chairs outside.
Easy Bow Pillow
Here are the supplies you need
- fabric
- matching thread (or I just use something that coordinates)
- rectangular pillow (I used a 12×16 travel one)
- fabric shears
- sewing machine
- hand sewing needle
Cut 2 pieces of fabric the size of your pillow form with an extra 1/2 inch for each sides seam allowance. So for my 12×16 pillow I cut it 13×17. Pin them together and sew completely around 3 of the 4 sides (sew 1/2 inch in from the edge) and only sew about 2/3 of the last side. You want to leave enough room to turn it inside out and to stuff the pillow in. I usually leave a little more room than I can slide my arm in.
Trim any excess fabric that will be inside to reduce bulk. Then turn the case inside out using the opening you left. Then roll the pillow up length wise and gently start wedging the pillow into the case. This takes a minute so don’t rush because you will start to rip the seams.
Once the pillow is in, it’s time to sew up the last opening. Pinch the opening together so that it aligns with what has already been sewed (you can pin this as well). Take your sewing needle and thread knotted at the bottom and sew up the opening by hand by starting with the needle underneath and looping over the top.

Now you need the tie to make the bow. Cut 2 strips of fabric about 1.5 -2 inches wide depending how wide you would like it and about 1.5 inches shorter than the width of the pillow. This is what will pull the center in to make it bow like. So I made mine 10.5 inches long because my pillow is 12 inches.

Pin the two pieces together and sew the 2 long sides together first. Then flip it inside out kind of inching it through so the raw side is inside now. Pinch together the ends and sew them together to make a loop. Flip that inside out and slip it onto the pillow and your done with your easy bow pillow!

*Make sure to trim off any loose threads there may be. You can also try this with prints or mixing prints and solids. If you don’t feel like sewing the middle piece you can even take a raw piece and tie it around for a different look.
Enjoy!
